ZWINNOŚĆ, WYTRZYMAŁOŚĆ I INSTYNKT DO PRACY

Jej ruch i reakcje stawiają przed koniem zadanie wymagające szybkości, koncentracji oraz cow sense – naturalnej zdolności do odczytywania i przewidywania ruchu bydła.

CO PRZEPISY NRCHA MÓWIĄ O PRACY Z KROWĄ?

Jedną z podstawowych zasad cow work jest kontrola nad krową.

Bobby Ingersoll, członek NRCHA Hall of Fame, ujął to następująco:

HERD WORK – KOŃ MUSI „CZYTAĆ” KROWĘ

Innym elementem reined cow horse jest herd work.

DLACZEGO CORRIENTE?

LAS TUNAS I NRCHA

Miguel Guerrero z Las Tunas Performance Horses podkreślił:

Why Does the Cow Matter in Cow Horse? A Closer Look at Corriente Cattle.

In reined cow horse, most of the attention naturally goes to the horse. However, the cattle used in training and competition also play an important role.

Las Tunas Performance Horses provides an interesting example. The operation has entered into a multi-year partnership with the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA). In addition to breeding American Quarter Horses and Black Angus cattle, Las Tunas also raises Corriente cattle selected for traits useful in working situations.

AGILITY, ENDURANCE AND WORKING INSTINCT

According to NRCHA, the Corriente cattle at Las Tunas are selected for qualities including agility, endurance and instinct to work.

These traits are particularly relevant in reined cow horse. The cow is not simply another element in the arena. Its movement and reactions create a challenge that requires speed, concentration and cow sense – the horse’s ability to read, anticipate and react to cattle.

WHAT DO NRCHA RULES SAY ABOUT WORKING A COW?

One of the fundamental principles of cow work is control of the cow.

NRCHA Hall of Fame member Bobby Ingersoll puts it simply:

“The most important thing in working a cow is that the horse should have the advantage or control over the cow.”

In cow work, also known as fence work, the rider begins by controlling the cow at the short end of the arena, a phase known as boxing. The cow is then allowed to move down the long side of the arena, where the horse and rider turn it on the fence. The final part involves taking the cow into the open arena and circling it.

NRCHA rewards performances in which the horse demonstrates control of the cow, correct position, a high degree of difficulty and quality execution.

HERD WORK – THE HORSE MUST READ THE COW

Another element of reined cow horse competition is herd work. The horse and rider separate one animal from the herd and prevent it from returning.

The run lasts 2.5 minutes, during which the competitor will typically work two or three cattle.

Herd work judging considers factors including control of the cow, degree of difficulty, time worked, the horse’s courage and its ability to work independently on a loose rein.

This is where cow sense becomes particularly evident. A good cow horse should watch the cow, anticipate its movement This is where cow sense becomes particularly evident. A good cow horse should watch the cow, anticipate its movement and react immediately when it changes direction.

WHY CORRIENTE CATTLE?

The information about the Las Tunas breeding program is particularly interesting because of the traits for which its Corriente cattle are selected: agility, endurance and instinct to work.

Corriente is a breed of cattle descended from Spanish cattle brought to the Americas. They are relatively light, agile and highly mobile cattle and are commonly associated with ranch work and Western disciplines involving cattle.

An active cow that responds to pressure from the horse gives the horse an opportunity to demonstrate its ability to maintain position, anticipate movement and effectively control cattle.

However, one important point should be emphasized: NRCHA rules do not require Corriente cattle to be used in competition. Corriente cattle are mentioned here because

this is the breed raised and selected by Las Tunas Performance Horses.

LAS TUNAS AND NRCHA

The information about the Corriente cattle program was highlighted in connection with the multi-year partnership between Las Tunas Performance Horses and the NRCHA, announced on September 17, 2026.

Las Tunas became the presenting sponsor of the Open Bridle classes at major NRCHA events. The partnership begins with the 2026 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity and also includes the Celebration of Champions, CINCH Stallion Stakes and Hackamore Classic.

Miguel Guerrero of Las Tunas Performance Horses said:

“At Las Tunas, we believe in supporting the people, horses, and organizations that move the performance horse industry forward while staying true to the traditions and values it was built on.”

Reined cow horse requires speed, courage, precision and the ability to react independently to the movement of cattle.

That is why a good cow horse needs more than a good rider.

It also needs the right cow.
